Interconnectedness of Life

Marcey Shapiro, MD

“Fear of microorganisms never sat well with me, so the idea that started this book was the simple question, “could there be another way, biomedically, to understand and relate to microscopic life?” …..

“When I began this book, I did not realize the direction it would take, and how medicine, biology, quantum theory and mechanics, mystical insights, ecology, resilience theory and channeling might all neatly dovetail. I started Transforming the Nature of Health merely as an attempt to revisit our relationship with the world of microscopic organisms. But as I looked at the complexities of human relationships with microorganisms, I quickly saw a correspondence between the microcosm of our treatment of miniscule life forms and the macrocosm of human/human relationships. How we treat and relate to “them” is how we think about others, nature and ourselves.

Metamorphosis of our relationship with microorganisms is one facet of the great transformation of our understanding of the universe currently transpiring. We are, as a global civilization, beginning to realize that consciousness itself is the great creative force of all life. We are starting to appreciate the dizzying wisdom that the external world always reflects the inner world. We have a dawning of understanding that all of humanity is connected. These are fundamental and profound insights that spiritual teachers from diverse traditions have shared throughout the ages. Today cutting-edge science is proving the “reality” of these ancient mystical truths. Every branch of science and spirituality is affected by this new comprehension. Yet as a global civilization, we barely understand the enormous ramifications of the changes that are upon us.

We are spiritual beings engaged in a physical existence. We remain spiritual beings throughout every moment of our lives. Most people believe in an underlying spiritual reality greater than our physical existence. So it is odd that as a society we still agree to the conclusions of a “science” that rejects and ignores this reality. It is ironic indeed that it is precisely the leading edges of our very materialistic science establishment that lead us back to what we already know in our hearts: the underlying unity of all being.”
