Peace in Medicine

Marcey Shapiro, MD

While we have gained many valuable things from our current technological era, as we move forward we will need to find the language to describe our inner hopes while allowing and nurturing a new vision. Personally, I want to live in harmony with the natural world. Fighting disease and conquering illness puts us on the battlefield, as does fighting crime and drugs. This is just another manifestation of “battling the infidels.” It is war. It’s another version of “an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.” I am bored with the war. Perhaps you are too. …

Imagine if we spent our enormous resources and talents creating wonders of beauty, pleasure, and harmony. What if the bacteria, the viruses, and the mosquitoes are all happy cooperative players in whatever game we are playing? Today they have agreed to be villains, because we cast them in the role of villains; tomorrow they are pleased to be friends and collaborators.

In order to think differently about our health, our bodies, and the natural world, we can use different words. We can tell different stories. To make positive changes, we can think and dream about what we do want.
