Managing Your Persistent Fears, Anxieties, and Stresses

Although everybody deals with anxiety and depression, some people have a difficult time managing their moods. Here is a brief list of techniques we can use to help manage our most persistent fears and every day anxieties and stresses.

When facing a current or upcoming task that overwhelms you and makes you anxious, the first thing you can do is to divide the task into a series of smaller steps. Completing these smaller tasks one at a time will make the anxiety more manageable. This technique also increases your chances of success.

Sometimes we feel stressed out when everything happens all at once. When this happens, take a deep breath and try to find something else to do for a few minutes to get your mind off of the problem. You can go outside and breathe in some fresh air, listen to music you enjoy, or do something else that will give you a fresh perspective.

When you run up against something that makes you fearful, visualize a stop sign. This will be a reminder that you should stop focusing on that scary thought and think of something cheerier. Think of something positive to replace the negative thought.

Another helpful technique is to carry a small notebook filled with positive statements that make you feel good. Whenever you come across an affirmation you like, write it down in this notebook and keep it in your pocket. Whenever you feel depressed or frustrated, open the notebook and read the affirmations. This will help you manage your negative thinking.

Another good idea for managing fears and stress is to learn to take it one day at a time. Instead of worrying about how you will get through the rest of the week, try to focus on just today. Each day can give us opportunities to learn new things, and that includes learning new ways to deal with your problems. You never know when the answers you’re looking for will land right on your doorstep. We may be ninety-nine percent correct in predicting the future, but all it takes is for that one percent to make a world of difference.

It’s also useful to take advantage of the help that is available all around you. If possible, talk to a professional who can help you manage your depression and anxieties. He or she will be able to give you additional advice and insights on how to deal with your current problem. When you talk to a professional, you will be helping yourself in the long run because you will become better able to deal with your problems in the future. Remember that it never hurts to ask for help.

Dealing with our persistent fears is not easy. Remember that all you can do each day is to do your best, hope for the best, and take things in stride. Patience, persistence, education, and being committed to solving your problems will go along way in helping you live a happier life.
