How to Make Exercise Feel More Like an Adventure

There are so many folks who won’t exercise unless it’s fun. That’s why we have so many zumba dance classes and 5K themed runs. People who want to have fun love these kinds of exercise. But some people still won’t exercise. Let’s make every workout both fun and rewarding. I have some ideas.

1. Set out with no expectations of how things are going to turn out.
Whether you are taking your first TRX class at the gym or running an obstacle course, try to go in without unreal expectations. Think of it as facing a blank canvas. Just get started. When you’re not worrying too much that you don’t know what to do or you’re doing it wrong, you’ll have more fun exercising.

2. Invite your friends to come along.
Trying something new and challenging is always more fun when you have a friend to help you over a wall or laugh sympathetically when you fall down. If you don’t bring a friend to your workout, make some new ones while you’re there. Be approachable and personable. Crack a joke or two and win ‘em over.

3. Bring a camera (if you can).
Silly poses lighten the mood and will likely ignite laughter. It’s also easier to preserve your memories of good times when you look at photos of yourself having that good time being physically active. Having photos of your fitness adventure is also a good reminder of what you actually look like when you need some extra motivation to keep pushing on. Photos show you how far you’ve come!

4. Be prepared with hydration and a light snack.
Getting cramps or becoming dehydrated spoils all of the fun. Make sure to have plenty of water, electrolytes, and a small snack to get you through your activity. Get creative with your sports drinks and snacks and look around until you find the ones you really like. That can be an adventure in itself. If you’re workout is a short one, eat and drink a little before and after. If it’s longer (one-plus hours), refuel when you can. No matter how long your fitness adventure lasts, make sure you’re fueled up and hydrated.

5. If you are spending time outdoors, enjoy the nature and wildlife around you.
There have been many times when I’ve seen turkeys, moose, deer, marmots, beavers, rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, and even peacocks while I’ve been running or exercising on local trails. You can, too. Take the time to be curious about wild critters, but from a distance. Also take advantage of the big cool rocks, or sunny ones, that you can climb up on and do pushups or planks. If you’re feeling especially strong, climb a tree (and pose for a picture, of course).

6. Ladies: Don’t be afraid to get dirty, sweaty, and…well gross.
Trying to look beautiful while you are working out is going to kill the fun mood, big time. Forget about how you look. Just get into the workout. No one wants to hear you complaining that sweat is smearing your makeup. Don’t be that person! It’s okay to want to look cute, but don’t fixate on it to the point when you’re not having any fun.

7. Listen to music while you’re getting fit.
If your friends have ditched you and you’re not taking a fitness class, put in some ear buds and rock out to your favorite tunes. You can sing along and keep your body moving at the same time. Put your music on shuffle and listen to every song that plays. You might be surprised when just the right song plays at just the right time to help clear out any mental baggage you might be carrying into your workout…or even your everyday life.
